FEILDING SALEYARDS

Figure 1. Feilding Saleyards. Palmerston North, Aotearoa New Zealand, March 17, 2019.

This shot was recorded at the Feilding Saleyards down in Feilding, not far from Palmerston North. My visual emphasis was placed in the typographic presence of the number 62 that could translate the capacity of stock at the saleyard, showing that there is a hefty amount of stock at this particular yard. I used the symbolic sign represented by the number in contrast to the iconic shape of the sheep to ponder a social critique on how their lives represent merely numbers, in many cases without observing the Animal Welfare Act, 1999. Aesthetically I used desaturated colours and reinforced the caged feeling using the timber as a frame in the frame.
